HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a viral infection that attacks the immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells (T cells). Over time, HIV can weaken the immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight off infections and diseases, ultimately leading to a condition called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) if left untreated.
The symptoms of HIV infection can vary from person to person and may not appear immediately after contracting the virus. Common symptoms include fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, rash, and muscle aches, although it’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, and the only way to confirm HIV infection is through proper testing.
The treatment for HIV typically involves a combination of antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications. These medications help suppress the replication of the virus, reduce its impact on the immune system, and improve overall health. It’s important for individuals living with HIV to work closely with healthcare professionals to determine the most appropriate treatment regimen based on their specific needs and circumstances.
